Cortisol Response with ADHD
Cortisol is a hormone produced by the adrenal cortex and is released in response to stress, as part of the body's 'fight or flight' mechanism. Cortisol levels are known to be higher on average in people diagnosed with Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD). This increased cortisol response in ADHD is believed to be linked to reduced cognitive performance, impaired memory, and decreased executive functioning. Increased cortisol levels are also associated with higher rates of anxiety and depression in those with ADHD. Understanding the role of cortisol in ADHD may be beneficial in creating tailored treatment plans to reduce symptoms of the disorder, as well as providing insight into its underlying biology.
