Traumatic Brain Injury
A traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a form of physical injury to the brain caused by a trauma such as a fall, motor vehicle accident, or an assault. TBI can range from mild (concussion) to severe (severe brain tissue damage) and can cause long-term physical and mental health problems. Symptoms of TBI include impaired cognition, memory loss, headaches, irritability, poor concentration, depression, and fatigue. Treatments for TBI include rest, physical and occupational therapy, psychotherapy, and rehabilitation. TBI is a major cause of disability and death in the United States and around the world and there is a significant need for research to improve treatments and outcomes.
