Forensic Taphonomy
Forensic taphonomy is the scientific study of biological decomposition and its application to criminal investigations. It is used to understand the process of postmortem changes to the human body and its associated materials, such as clothing, jewelry, and trace evidence. By studying the stages of decomposition, forensic taphonomists can provide information about the timing of death, the location of where the body was placed, and whether or not an event such as a crime or accident has taken place. The information gathered from forensic taphonomy can be used to develop new methods of crime scene reconstruction, and identify any possible evidence present from the scene. Forensic taphonomy is a valuable tool in criminal investigation and has become increasingly important as crime scene investigation standards and protocols have evolved.
