Genetic Fingerprinting
Genetic fingerprinting is a biotechnology technique used to identify an individual’s unique genetic information. It is based on the discovery that the genetic makeup of an individual is unique, similar to a fingerprint. By analyzing tiny variations in an individual’s DNA, genetic fingerprinting can be used to accurately identify individuals, provide insight into an individual’s ancestry, and even detect possible inherited diseases. This technology has had wide-reaching implications in both scientific and legal contexts, from forensics to paternity testing to conservation. In forensics, DNA evidence can often provide an accurate and definitive link between a perpetrator and a crime scene. In paternity testing, genetic fingerprinting can determine with a high degree of accuracy whether a tested person is the biological parent of another individual. In conservation, genetic fingerprinting can identify endangered species and can also help assess the genetic diversity of a species population.
