Stable Isotopes

Stable isotopes are versions of chemical elements that have the same number of protons in their nucleus, but a different number of neutrons. This creates different atomic mass and gives the isotopes distinct properties. This can be useful to help identify the source of materials and to follow the flow of certain elements in nature. Stable isotopes are used in a variety of applications such as to trace the movement of pollutants in the environment and to track the production, storage and export of food products. By understanding the movement of unstable isotopes, scientists can better understand how materials are being transported, how ecosystems are being maintained and how to identify sources of pollution.
