Trace Evidence Analysis
Trace evidence analysis is the study of small objects in order to gain information about a crime scene. It is a significant tool used in criminal investigations, as it can be used to identify a perpetrator, corroborate witness statements, or provide an alibi. Trace evidence analysis involves examining and comparing the chemical composition of a particular sample to those of known reference materials. In addition, the physical characteristics, such as size and shape, are also taken into account. By doing so, investigators can link an object or person to a particular location or event. For instance, trace evidence analysis may be used to link a suspect to a crime scene by examining fibers or soil found on the suspect’s clothes. Ultimately, the goal of trace evidence analysis is to provide evidence that is useful in court.
