Polymyalgia Rheumatica Treatment
Polymyalgia rheumatica (PMR) is a chronic inflammatory disorder that causes pain and stiffness in the muscles of the shoulders, neck, hips and thighs. Treatment for PMR includes corticosteroids, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) and immunosuppressive drugs. Corticosteroids, such as prednisone, act quickly to reduce inflammation, while NSAIDs and immunosuppressants can help prevent flares and reduce long-term damage. Treatment is generally effective in relieving pain and stiffness, although it may take several weeks before noticeable improvement occurs. Regular exercise and low-impact physical activities can help relieve symptoms and improve overall quality of life.
