Subacromial Bursitis
Subacromial bursitis is an inflammatory condition of the bursa below the acromion, a bony projection of the shoulder blade. It is caused by irritation and inflammation of the bursa, which is a lubricating sac filled with synovial fluid. When inflammation occurs, it can cause pain, tenderness and limited range of motion in the shoulder joint. Treatment typically includes rest, physical therapy, steroid injections and medications such as nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). In severe cases, surgery may be necessary. Subacromial bursitis is a common cause of shoulder pain and disability in both athletes and the general population. Early recognition and treatment is key to successful recovery and a full return to activities of daily living.
