Animal-assisted Therapy
(AAT). Animal-assisted therapy (AAT) is a type of therapy that involves interactions between humans and animals to improve the physical, mental and emotional wellbeing of individuals. AAT has proven to be a beneficial complementary treatment for a variety of health conditions such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder. Benefits of AAT include enhanced motivation, reduced fear and stress, improved quality of life and social interaction, and increased cognitive and physical functioning. AAT helps to improve communication skills, build self-confidence, foster self-awareness, develop self-regulation, and strengthen empathy and compassion. By forming a bond between the person receiving the therapy and the animal, it encourages individuals to explore and practice more adaptive behaviors. AAT also has the potential to increase physical activity, promote relaxation, and offer opportunities for learning and engagement.
