Exposure Therapy
Exposure therapy is a type of psychological treatment used to help people confront their fears. It is a form of cognitive behavioral therapy that desensitizes individuals to a particular fear (e.g. anxiety, phobias, distress, panic) through gradual and repeated exposure. Through this process, patients can relearn how to respond differently to their fear to gain more control over their reactions and reactions to situations they find themselves in. This can be done through direct exposure to an actual event or through the use of imaginal techniques such as mental imagery, video, or virtual reality simulations. Exposure therapy has been found to be effective in treating different mental health issues such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), phobias, obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and generalized anxiety disorder (GAD). Additionally, it can be beneficial for patients whose fear is linked to physical health conditions such as chronic pain and chronic fatigue syndrome.
