Geriatric Psychiatry

Geriatric Psychiatry is a medical specialty that focuses on the mental health of older adults. It focuses on understanding, preventing, diagnosing, and treating mental illnesses, including those related to aging, such as dementia and mood disorders. Geriatric Psychiatry also addresses issues related to the psychological, social, and biological aspects of aging. This specialty is important to ensure the mental health of an aging population and help to improve the quality of life of older adults. Geriatric Psychiatrists have expertise in providing medical, psychological and social treatments, as well as counseling and psychosocial therapies. Treatment options may include medication and psychotherapy, but other supports such as social services, recreational activities, family counseling and support, and living assistance are also important aspects in providing comprehensive care for older adults.
