Biogenic Amines

Biogenic amines are organic compounds derived from the metabolism of amino acids, primarily by enzymatic decarboxylation. These substances play a vital role in many physiological activities in humans and other organisms, such as digestion, sleep, metabolism, and reproduction. Additionally, biogenic amines are present in the human brain, where they act as neurotransmitters that convey signals between neurons. Substantial evidence suggests the involvement of biogenic amines in the development and maintenance of mental health, as they appear to be closely linked to both normal and abnormal behavior. Understanding their function in the human body is therefore essential for improving the diagnosis, prevention and treatment of various mental health conditions, such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia.
