Biolistics
Biolistics is the process of transferring foreign genetic material into plant cells using a particle accelerator or ‘gene gun’. This technique is used to genetically modify plants, by introducing new genetic information, as well as to make vaccines, study gene expression and develop medical treatments. The biolistic delivery system is more specific than other gene delivery techniques, enabling the targeting of specific cells and the transfer of large amounts of DNA, increasing the efficiency of the process. This method has been particularly useful in the development of transgenic (genetically modified) plants, which are increasingly being used to increase crop yields and improve resistance to disease and pests.
