Protein Metabolism
Protein metabolism refers to the metabolic processes that involve the breakdown and synthesis of proteins in living organisms – from the absorption of amino acids from dietary sources, through to the consistent replacement of amino acids that make up the tissue of the body. It is a key process in all living organisms, as proteins are essential for the structure and function of cells, enzymes, hormones and other molecules. Protein metabolism is also responsible for providing the body with energy and for removing nitrogen from the body. Without adequate protein metabolism, a person would not be able to take in vital nutrients, synthesize amino acids for the growth and repair of tissues, or metabolize bodily waste.
