Protein Structure
Proteins are complex molecules composed of amino acids linked together in a linear chain. They are the workhorses of the body, serving a variety of important functions related to metabolism, reproduction, growth, development, and many other processes. Protein structure is the three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in an amino acid-chain molecule, and it is essential for a protein to carry out its function. Different proteins fold into unique, highly specific shapes that allow them to interact with other molecules and recruit cofactors for the completion of the biochemical task at hand, making protein structure an important factor in understanding biological processes. Additionally, the study of protein structure can provide insights into drug design and development, as drugs can be designed to interact with a specific protein in order to modify its activity or halt its function.
