Protein Structure Determination
Protein structure determination is the process of determining the detailed three-dimensional arrangement of atoms in molecules, particularly proteins. This structural information is critical for understanding the function of proteins, and is beneficial for drug development, diagnostics, biotechnology and medical research. Through the use of sophisticated techniques and technologies, such as X-ray crystallography and nuclear magnetic resonance, scientists are now able to create accurate three-dimensional (3D) models of proteins. These detailed 3D protein structure models enable scientists to better understand the molecular structure of proteins and the molecular basis of diseases. In addition, high resolution 3D protein structure models can help scientists design drugs that target specific protein sites in order to treat a variety of diseases. Protein structure determination, therefore, provides a critical step in understanding and developing solutions for many medical conditions.
