Astrocytoma

Astrocytoma is a type of tumor that affects the brain and spinal cord. It is a type of glioma, which is a broad term for tumors that form from the supportive tissue of the brain and spine. Astrocytomas form from star-shaped cells called astrocytes and can range from low-grade to high-grade in terms of aggressiveness. Astrocytomas are the most common type of glioma, and can be found in children or adults. Treatment for astrocytomas may include surgery, chemotherapy and/or radiation therapy. Astrocytomas can be difficult to treat due to their location in the brain and spine, their ability to spread, and their resistance to certain therapies. For these reasons, astrocytomas can have a major impact on an individual's quality of life.

Doctors refer to a tumor based on where the tumor cells originated, and whether they are cancerous or not. Brain and spinal cord tumors are different for everyone. They form in different areas and develop from different cell types.
