Meninges

The meninges are a three-layer membrane system that surrounds and protects the central nervous system. They are made up of the dura mater, the arachnoid mater, and the pia mater. This protective system serves to keep the brain and spinal cord safe from infection and injury, acting as a barrier against harmful outside forces. They are also crucial for maintaining the proper environment for nerve cells. The meninges provide nourishment to the nervous tissue and help keep it hydrated, while also playing a role in preventing the build-up of excessive pressure within the brain. In addition, the meninges are home to small blood vessels, lymph vessels, and a network of nerves that can detect touch, pressure, and sensations. The importance of meninges in both the physical and chemical protection of the brain makes them vital for good health and function.

They form in different areas and develop from different cell types.
