Postnatal Anxiety
Postnatal anxiety is a mental health condition experienced by new mothers soon after giving birth. It affects an estimated 10-20% of new mothers and can involve intense feelings of worry and fear. Symptoms include rapid heart rate, shortness of breath, difficulty concentrating, sleep disturbances, and feeling detached from one’s baby. Postnatal anxiety is particularly significant as it can interfere with a mother’s ability to bond with her baby, can lead to increased levels of stress and depression, and negatively affects the emotional and physical health of both the mother and infant. Treatment for postnatal anxiety includes a combination of counseling, meditation, exercise, and emotional support from family and friends. Early diagnosis and intervention are key to providing new mothers with the resources and support they need to manage postnatal anxiety.
