Postnatal Depression
Postnatal depression (PND) is a form of clinical depression that can occur in the first months following childbirth. It is more than just feeling tired or overwhelmed and can be a serious condition that needs medical attention. Symptoms of PND are similar to those of depression and can include low mood, feelings of hopelessness, anxiety and insomnia. PND can have a major impact on both the physical and mental health of the mother, and can also affect the relationship between mother and baby, as well as the baby’s development. Treatment for PND can include psychotherapy, support groups, medications and lifestyle changes. Early diagnosis and treatment is important in order to reduce the long-term effects of PND and enable the mother to bond with her baby and effectively manage her symptoms.
