DNA Mutations in Cancer
DNA mutations are changes to the genetic code that make up the DNA of a cell. Mutations can occur in any cell, but they are particularly important in cancer cells, as they are the cause of tumor growth and the spread of cancer throughout the body. DNA mutations can be caused by environmental factors, such as tobacco smoke, UV radiation, and certain chemicals, or they can be inherited from a person's parents. In cancer cells, these mutations can affect the cell's growth and division, resulting in uncontrolled cell proliferation, which can form a tumor. By studying the mutations associated with cancer, researchers can better understand the development of the disease and use this knowledge to develop more effective treatments.
