Carbohydrate Digestion
Carbohydrate digestion is the process by which carbohydrates (sugars, starches, and fibers) are broken down into smaller molecules that can be absorbed by the body. The digestive process is important for releasing energy and essential nutrients from foods and for maintaining overall health. Carbohydrate digestion begins in the mouth with the action of saliva and chewing. From there, enzymes in the stomach and small intestine continue to break down carbohydrates into smaller molecules that can be absorbed into the bloodstream. The absorption of carbohydrates helps to maintain proper blood sugar levels, provide energy for the body, and keep the immune system functioning properly. Additionally, carbohydrates are needed for healthy brain and nervous system functioning. Improper digestion of carbohydrates can cause an array of health issues, including fatigue, digestive discomfort, and nutrient deficiency.
