Carbohydrates Metabolism
Carbohydrate metabolism is the metabolic process by which carbohydrates are broken down to produce energy and other metabolic end products. This process occurs in all living organisms and is essential for growth, development and survival. Carbohydrates are the main source of energy for cells and are used in various physiological processes. The end products of carbohydrate metabolism are used to generate ATP, as well as other substances that are used in cellular activities such as protein synthesis, cellular signaling and cell motility. Carbohydrate metabolism is also important in the regulation of blood sugar levels and the production of hormones. Proper carbohydrate metabolism is essential for the healthy functioning of the organs and tissues in the body.
