Genetic Aspects
of diabetes Diabetes is a metabolic disorder characterized by high blood sugar levels, resulting from defects in insulin secretion, insulin action, or both. Genetics plays a key role in the development of type 1 and type 2 diabetes, with some genes and gene variants linked to an increased risk of diabetes. Researchers have identified more than 30 genes associated with diabetes, with many more that are thought to be involved. Understanding the genetic aspects of diabetes helps to identify individuals who may be at risk for developing diabetes, as well as to gain insights into the potential causes and treatments for the disease. Furthermore, this knowledge can be used to develop preventive strategies and to inform diabetes management.
