Pica
Pica is an eating disorder characterized by the persistent eating of non-food items such as dirt, clay, or paper. This disorder occurs more frequently in children and adults with intellectual disabilities, although it can occur in people without any diagnosed mental health disorder. People with pica may not recognize the danger of eating non-food items and can present with abdominal pain, constipation, anemia, or lead poisoning. Pica can have serious impacts on physical health, but can also have psychological consequences, such as feelings of guilt, shame, and isolation. Treatment for pica generally includes psychological and nutritional counseling to address underlying behavioral, cognitive, and emotional issues. Education about the risks and proper nutrition is also necessary for successful management of the disorder.
