Psychiatric Disorders in Children with Chronic Illness
Psychiatric disorders in children with chronic illnesses are an increasingly recognised problem. They are associated with higher levels of physical and psychological distress, poorer clinical outcomes, and increased health care costs. A precise diagnosis of psychiatric disorders in children with chronic illnesses is paramount in order to provide more precise and effective treatment. Furthermore, early detection and appropriate intervention can significantly reduce the burden of these conditions on both the child and family. Research shows that when children with chronic illnesses are monitored closely, they have an increased ability to comply with medical regimens and to better manage the emotional and behavioural changes associated with their health issues. This improved self-regulation can help the child cope better and lead to a better long-term physical and mental health outcome.
