Amniocentesis

Amniocentesis is a medical procedure used to collect a small sample of amniotic fluid that surrounds a fetus during pregnancy. The fluid contains genetic material from the fetus, and is used to detect genetic abnormalities and diagnose various genetic conditions, such as Down syndrome. It is an important screening test for pregnant women, since it can provide accurate and important information regarding the health of the fetus. Amniocentesis can also be used to detect infections, monitor lung maturity, and determine the gender of the baby.
