Chromosome Structure and Function
Chromosomes are the basic building blocks of genetic information. They are composed of tightly coiled strands of DNA, and they contain the genetic instructions that make up an organism&s genome. Chromosome structure and function are essential to the maintenance of an organism&s genetic integrity. Through the process of replication, chromosomes allow the transmission of genetic information between generations. Chromosomes also control the expression of genes, allowing for the production of proteins necessary for development and function. In humans, chromosome studies have been important for etiological studies of human genetic diseases and for the development of diagnostic tests. Chromosomes have also contributed to advances in biotechnology, such as in the manipulation of organisms for genetic engineering, gene mapping, and gene therapy.
