Polytene Chromosomes

Polytene chromosomes are a type of chromosome found in diverse species of the animal kingdom ranging from protozoans to insects. Polytene chromosomes are large and easily visible under the microscope. They are made from DNA strands that have been tightly and intricately wound together, much like a rope, to form a single large chromosome. The distinctiveness of these chromosomes lies in the high degree of packing of the DNA strands, enabling them to contain more genes than normal chromosomes. Polytene chromosomes play an important role in the study of gene expression, as they are a reliable source for genetic research. They are also useful in the understanding of the evolution of different species, as well as the study of the structure and function of specific genes.
