HIV/AIDS and Substance Abuse
HIV/AIDS and substance abuse are two public health issues that are closely linked and often have high rates of co-occurrence. Substance use can increase the likelihood of HIV transmission through unprotected sex, sharing of needles, and weakened immune systems due to drug toxicity. Substance abuse can also complicate treatment of the virus and the symptoms of AIDS. Therefore, prevention, screening, education and interventions that focus on both HIV/AIDS and substance abuse are essential to reduce the impact of these problems. Substance abuse treatment can also help manage some of the physical, mental, and social consequences of HIV infection.
