Open Colectomy
Open colectomy is a surgical procedure in which a section or portion of the colon (large intestine) is removed. It may be done to treat cancer, diverticular disease, or conditions that cause the colon to become blocked with stool (obstructive diseases). Removal of the colon is a major procedure and may require recovery time of up to six weeks. Open colectomy is an effective and safe treatment for many diseases of the colon, and can help improve a patient's quality of life.
