Plant Genomics
Plant genomics is the study of an entire plant's genetic code and its organization, function, and interactions with its environment. By analyzing an organism's genome, scientists can determine the traits that enable plants to survive in different conditions and how those traits may help to increase crop yields, improve disease resistance, and uncover new sources of sustainable fuel. Plant genomics also offers the potential to develop technology that can help us understand the role of the environment on a plant’s growth, flowering, and productivity. This knowledge is being used to develop a variety of new and improved crop varieties, while helping to conserve global biodiversity. Plant genomics is therefore an important and interdisciplinary field, offering a suite of tools to help us understand and optimize future global food security.
