Plant Tissues
Plant tissues are collections of cells that work together to provide the structures and functions of a plant. There are three main types of plant tissues: dermal, vascular, and ground. Dermal tissue provides a protective covering (bark, leaves, hairs, and roots) and helps regulate gas exchange. Vascular tissue (xylem and phloem) transports water and nutrients throughout the plant’s body. Ground tissue provides mechanical support, photosynthesis, and storage of food and water. Plant tissues are important for plant growth and development, enabling plants to survive in the environment by controlling temperature, water, nutrient, and oxygen levels. They are also critical for providing the structure and form of many plants. They can be used in horticulture and agriculture, to improve crop yields and reduce damage caused by pests and disease.
