Arboviruses
Arboviruses are a group of viruses that are spread by mosquito, tick, and other blood-feeding insect vector hosts. They are responsible for a number of serious human illnesses, including the West Nile virus, dengue fever, chikungunya, yellow fever, and Zika virus. Scientists are particularly concerned about the growing presence of insect-borne arboviruses in populated areas, as the viruses can cause severe neurological and cardiac damage, permanent disability, and even death. With the increasing international travel of people, animals and goods, the spread of these viruses is expected to increase in the future. Prevention of arboviral diseases relies primarily on controlling their insect vectors through public health measures, such as mosquito control programs, insecticide spraying, and personal protection. Vaccines are available for some arboviruses, and medical treatment is available for those who become infected.
