Astroviruses
Astroviruses are a group of small, single-stranded RNA viruses that primarily cause gastrointestinal illness in humans, typically in children. They are most commonly transmitted by the fecal-oral route and can also be transmitted through contact with an infected person or ingestion of contaminated food or water. Astroviruses are a major cause of diarrheal disease in infants and young children, and can cause fever, vomiting, bloating, and abdominal pain. Treatment typically consists of supportive care and hydration. Astrovirus infection can be prevented through proper handwashing and food-handling practices. Vaccination for astrovirus is currently not available.
