Botulism
Botulism is a rare but serious form of food poisoning caused by a toxin produced by the bacteria Clostridium botulinum. It can affect people of all ages, but is most often seen in infants, the elderly and adults with weakened immune systems. The toxin, when ingested, can cause paralysis, confusion, and even death if left untreated. Botulism is treated with an antitoxin, as well as supportive measures such as breathing assistance and intensive care. Prevention of botulism includes proper food storage and handling, boiling or pasteurization of foods, and proper food preparation. Vaccines are also available.
