Hepatitis Viruses
Hepatitis viruses are a group of viruses that cause inflammation and damage to the liver. They are responsible for a range of illnesses from mild infection to more severe and life-threatening diseases such as cirrhosis and liver cancer. The five main types of hepatitis viruses are A, B, C, D, and E. These viruses are spread through contaminated food or water, contact with an infected person or objects, and through certain medical procedures. Vaccines are available to prevent the spread of hepatitis A and B. Treatment options for other types of hepatitis include antiviral medications, supportive care and, in some cases, a liver transplant. A better understanding of these viruses can help prevent and manage hepatitis infections, improve health outcomes and reduce potential health care costs.
