Infective Endocarditis

Infective endocarditis (IE) is a serious bacterial infection of the heart valves and inner lining of the heart chambers. It is usually caused by bacteria that enter the bloodstream and travel to the heart where it can cause severe damage, such as holes in the heart valves or inflammation of the inner walls of the heart chambers. IE can be life-threatening and requires prompt and aggressive treatment with antibiotics. It is an important consideration for people with an artificial heart valve, those who have had previous endocarditis, and anyone undergoing certain dental or medical procedures. Early diagnosis and treatment are important for improved outcomes and to help prevent further complications.
