Medical Entomology
Medical entomology is the scientific study of insects and other arthropods that affect human and animal health. It is an interdisciplinary field involving aspects of disease ecology, vector biology, and vector control. Medical entomology is important in understanding how insect-borne diseases are spread and how to protect against them. For example, insecticide treatments can be used to reduce the number of mosquitoes in an area, which decreases the risk of malaria transmission. Additionally, public health professionals use medical entomology to determine which insects are vectors for particular diseases, which can be key in designing control strategies that limit human exposure.
