Polyomavirus
Polyomaviruses are a group of small, non-enveloped viruses that infect a wide range of vertebrates, including humans. Polyomaviruses are important human and animal pathogens, with the human polyomavirus, the JC virus, being the cause of progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML) in immunosuppressed individuals.Polyomaviruses have a wide range of uses, including medical research, diagnostics, and biopharmaceutical production. In medical research, polyomaviruses are used to understand the pathogenesis of viruses, including their mechanisms of transmission and spread, as well as the development of new treatments and vaccines. In diagnostics, they can be used to diagnose viral infections, monitor viral activity, and identify viral variants or mutations. Finally, their high-yield expression capabilities can be used in the biopharmaceutical industry to produce biologics and vaccines.
