Proviruses
Proviruses are a type of virus that can hide within the genetic code of an organism or cell, allowing it to remain dormant until certain conditions are met. They are believed to play a major role in evolution, allowing organisms to acquire new traits over time. Additionally, they can provide genetic material for recombination, allowing organisms to adapt to changing environments. In recent years, proviruses have also been used in genetic engineering applications, such as gene therapy and crop modification. By recognizing and exploiting the role of proviruses, researchers can manipulate existing genes to produce desirable outcomes.
