Retinoblastoma
Retinoblastoma is a cancer of the eye that affects mostly young children. It starts in the retina, the light-sensitive layer of tissue that lines the back of the eye. It can cause vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. Fortunately, treatment is available and can be successful. Treatment may involve surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, or a combination of treatments depending on the severity of the cancer. Retinoblastoma is a rare cancer, but its early diagnosis is essential for successful treatment and good outcome. Treatment for retinoblastoma has improved greatly over the last few decades, and long-term survival for those affected is now close to 100%. Improved diagnosis, treatment and understanding of risk factors could help to further improve outcomes for those affected.
