Tobacco Mosaic Virus
Tobacco Mosaic Virus (TMV) is a pathogenic virus that infects plants, causing mosaic and yellowing of the leaves. TMV is composed of a single strand of RNA and encased in a protein shell. It is considered to be one of the first viruses to be discovered and is the type species of the genus Tobamovirus. TMV is widely used as a model organism in the fields of plant pathology and molecular biology, as it is one of the smallest and simplest known viruses, making it easier to study. Additionally, its phytotoxic properties have been utilized as a biopesticide to control certain insect pests in certain crops.
