Toxoids

Toxoids are an altered form of bacterial toxins (poisons) used in vaccines. Through a special process, the toxins are rendered harmless and unable to cause disease but still retain the ability to stimulate the body's immune system. As a result, the body creates an immune response to the toxoid and will then be able to protect itself if the bacteria are encountered. Toxoids are used in the production of many vaccines, including tetanus, diphtheria, and whooping cough, and are credited with saving millions of lives worldwide.
