Overview

Calcium is a divalent metallic element that serves as the principal mineral of mineralized tissue and as a ubiquitous intracellular signaling ion. In bone and teeth it is deposited as hydroxyapatite, a crystalline calcium phosphate that confers structural rigidity and provides the body's main calcium reservoir; in dentistry and implantology this mineral chemistry underlies the bioactive graft and substitute materials, such as calcium phosphosilicate and other calcium phosphate compounds, used in augmentation and regenerative procedures. Beyond its structural role, the tightly regulated concentration of free calcium ions governs an extraordinary range of physiological processes, functioning as a second messenger that couples membrane excitation to muscle contraction, neurotransmitter and hormone release, enzyme activation, coagulation, and cell signaling. Calcium flux through voltage-gated and other channels controls cardiomyocyte and skeletal-muscle function, and mutations affecting these channels can cause disorders such as periodic paralysis; dysregulation of intracellular calcium also contributes to inflammatory and degenerative pathology. Systemic calcium status, influenced by dietary intake, absorption, and hormonal control, is relevant to bone health, osteoporosis, and broader metabolic balance, and serum calcium serves as a clinical and risk marker. The journal publishes peer-reviewed research spanning calcium's roles in mineralized-tissue biology, biomaterials, cellular physiology, and nutrition.
