Overview

Dental, oral, and facial growth refers to the coordinated developmental processes by which the teeth, jaws, and craniofacial skeleton increase in size and change in form and proportion from infancy through adulthood. It encompasses tooth formation and eruption, the growth and remodeling of the maxilla and mandible, and the development of the facial soft tissues, governed by genetic programs, hormonal influences, and functional forces such as mastication. Disturbances in the magnitude, direction, or timing of these processes produce skeletal and dental discrepancies, including malocclusions of skeletal Class II and Class III type, maxillary constriction, anterior open bite, and facial asymmetry, which are the principal concern of orthodontics and dentofacial orthopedics. Assessment relies on cephalometric analysis of antero-posterior and vertical relationships and on three-dimensional imaging to characterize jaw position and growth pattern. Correction may employ orthodontic appliances, including mini-implant-supported devices and palatal expanders that exploit or compensate for remaining growth, and, in established skeletal discrepancies, combined orthodontic and orthognathic surgical management. Interdisciplinary and restorative approaches address both function and esthetics. Understanding normal craniofacial growth and its variations is therefore fundamental to diagnosing malocclusion, timing intervention, and planning treatment that aligns the dentition within a balanced and stable facial framework.
