Overview

A dental implant is a surgical fixture, usually a biocompatible titanium or titanium-alloy post, that is placed into the jawbone to replace the root of a missing tooth and to support a crown, bridge, or denture. The success of an implant depends on osseointegration, the process by which living bone grows into direct contact with the implant surface to create a stable foundation for the prosthetic restoration. Implant dentistry brings together oral surgery, prosthodontics, and bone biology, and it addresses both the placement of fixtures and the management of the surrounding hard and soft tissues. Important clinical themes include the evaluation of osseointegration through histologic and histomorphometric analysis, the handling of insufficient bone volume, and the assessment of complications such as abutment fracture or implant failure. Where the maxillary bone is inadequate, procedures such as sinus augmentation and lateral-window sinus lift use bone-graft and alloplastic materials, including calcium phosphosilicate, hydroxyapatite, and beta-tricalcium phosphate, to build a suitable site. Other approaches reflected in the journal's research include immediate implant placement and the socket-shield technique, corticobasal and compressive implants for cases of prior failure, implant-supported overdentures, surface modification, and the use of three-dimensional imaging such as cone-beam computed tomography for preoperative planning and risk assessment.
