Overview

Dental implants are artificial tooth roots, typically made of titanium, that are surgically placed into the jawbone to support replacement teeth such as crowns, bridges, or dentures. They provide a stable and durable foundation for restoring one or more missing teeth and offer a fixed alternative to conventional removable prostheses. The success of an implant depends on osseointegration, the process by which the implant fuses with surrounding bone, and on adequate bone volume and quality at the implant site. When bone is insufficient, augmentation procedures—including sinus lifts and the use of bone grafts and biomaterials—are often performed to enable implant placement. Research published under this topic includes reconstruction of the severely atrophic premaxilla using rhBMP-2 and titanium mesh, the efficacy of calcium phosphosilicate putty and hydroxyapatite or beta-tricalcium phosphate grafts in sinus augmentation, and histologic and histomorphometric evaluation of osseointegration. Further work covers the socket shield technique for immediate implants, corticobasal and compressive implants in cases of two-stage failure, two-implant mandibular overdentures, comparison of imaging modalities such as CBCT and orthopantomography for augmentation planning, scaffolds for bone tissue engineering, and the use of microRNAs to modify implant surfaces, reflecting the surgical, biomaterial, and prosthetic dimensions of implant dentistry.
