Overview

Dental public health is the branch of dentistry concerned with preventing oral disease and promoting oral health at the level of populations rather than individual patients. It applies the methods of epidemiology, health policy, health education, and programme evaluation to understand the distribution and determinants of conditions such as dental caries, periodontal disease, oral cancer, and orofacial trauma, and to design community-wide interventions that reduce them. Core activities include surveillance of disease prevalence, water and topical fluoridation, school-based preventive programmes, the use of antimicrobial agents such as fluoride and silver compounds, oral health promotion, and equitable organisation of dental services. Because oral health is socially patterned, the discipline gives particular attention to access barriers, vulnerable groups, and the integration of dental care into wider public health systems. Programme-level evidence in this field ranges from international school-based oral health initiatives delivering fluoride and silver ion compounds, to studies of injury patterns such as maxillofacial trauma among motorcycle crash victims, which inform preventive policy on protective equipment. Allied clinical and rehabilitative research, including periodontal treatment, implant-supported prosthodontics, and restorative materials, supplies the evidence base that population-level strategies draw upon to set priorities and measure outcomes.
