Overview
Dentistry and oral health concern the prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of diseases and disorders of the teeth, gums, and oral cavity, and the maintenance of oral function and structure as integral parts of general health. The field is inherently multidisciplinary, combining restorative, surgical, orthodontic, and prosthetic care to manage conditions ranging from tooth loss to esthetic and functional rehabilitation. A major emphasis is the replacement of missing teeth and the reconstruction of supporting bone, where grafting with bioactive materials such as calcium phosphosilicate putty, hydroxyapatite, and beta-tricalcium phosphate is used to augment the maxillary sinus and atrophic ridges, and where recombinant bone morphogenetic protein with titanium mesh can reconstruct severely atrophic premaxilla for implant placement. Restorative and orthodontic integration is exemplified by multidisciplinary use of ceramic laminate veneers, and conservative tooth-preserving options include autotransplantation for missing molars. Accurate diagnosis and treatment planning rely on imaging modalities such as cone beam computed tomography and orthopantomography, whose comparative roles inform procedures like sinus augmentation. By uniting preventive measures with surgical, regenerative, and reconstructive techniques, dentistry sustains oral health and addresses its links to broader systemic wellbeing across the lifespan.
